City House: or how I got oven envy

By bigdee4933 2 days, 11 hours, 51 minutes ago

Last weekend my girlfriend and I took at trip to Nashville and it is now solidified in my mind that there is great (strike that) PERFECT food outside of Chicago and New York. City House in Nashville is one of the best restaurants I have ever visited.

When we walked in we were greeted with smiles. They asked us if we had dinner reservations, which we did, and they promptly sat us at our table. We sat in the bar area where the whole cooking area was visible. And the main attraction of the room is the huge wood burning oven. I have never been more envious of anything. Before I had time to pick up my jaw the waitress came to the table, menus in hand. The menu seemed to almost be hand written on a piece of nice paper. We opted out of starters but wanted wine. Since we had already been to The Flying Saucer and had gallery hopping to do we skipped the bottle and stuck with wine by the glass. I pride myself in have wine knowledge but she was almost Sommelier status. She led us to an off the list wine that was replacing one of the Cabs that was. I can’t remember the vineyard, but I trusted her suggestion and went with it. Earthy with a little apricot was how the wine was described to us. I really didn’t pull out the apricot but it did have that earthy taste to it, which I love.

Now what did we have to eat? We ordered two pizzas, a Margherita pizza and a potato pizza with Gorgonzola cheese. We were informed that since they couldn’t pick the basil fresh the Margherita pizza didn’t have it. City House does not compromise on ingredients. Either it is fresh or it is not going on anyone’s plate, words I wish more restaurants would live by. Also by suggestion of the waitress we ordered our pizzas with an egg in the middle. It may sound a little strange, but in a place like that I will trust the waitress.

When the pizzas came out you were instantly hit with the smell. I was ready. The mozzarella. OH the mozzarella, which was made in house can only be described as heavenly. The Gorgonzola pizza was perfect. They were masters of their craft, and with such simplicity of ingredients any imperfections would have stuck out. The you got to the best part, the center. In the center of the pizza was an egg perfectly cooked to over easy. When you put the fork in, the yolk ran all over. The marriage of egg yolk, potato, Gorgonzola, and rosemary is unbelievable. I continued to stuff myself till I couldn’t eat any more. Everything was great and the price was reasonable. The grand total for two pizzas and wine was $45. And considering the wine was $18 you can see the food is more than reasonable.

So next time you are in Nashville try and check out City House.
